Naturalisation – Applying to become a British Citizen
Applying for Naturalisation is for many of our clients often the final process in a long journey. It is an exciting time but it can still be challenging.
Some applications are straightforward but for many there are still issues that need to be dealt with and some barriers to overcome.
First of all you will need to jump a few hurdles such as passing the Life in the UK and English Language Tests and you will have to show you have been in the UK for 5 years before you apply. You will need to have had ILR for a year.
You will also have to show that you have not been absent from the UK for too long during that 5 year period. If you have been away for more than 450 days you will need to have good reasons. Even if you have been away for more than 90 days in the year prior to applying you will need to explain why. If you do not your application could be refused.
There are other factors that can complicate cases such as having criminal convictions and you should seek advice if this applies to you.
There is more than one route to becoming British and this is especially so for children including those born both inside and outside of the UK.
Nationality Law can be complex but we have years of experience in the field and we can guide you through the process to make it a stress free as possible.
